Abstract

Chill cast Al-0 to 5%Hf alloys were examined. Hf up to 3% is soluble in chill cast solid aluminum. The alloys containing Hf3.5% or more have a non-equilibrium Ll2 structure. The metastable Al3Hf plays an active nucleolus for the angular structure and leads to remarkable grain refining in aluminum. The metastable Al3Hf with Ll2 structure continuously and discontinuously precipitates from the super saturated solid solution during tempering. The spherical continuous precipitates considerably harden the alloys. The cold rolled Al-3.5 and 4%Hf alloys have a structure stable at elevated temperatures. This fact is based on locking of dislocations by precipitated metastable particles finely dispersed.
