Microstructures of aluminum containing titanium up to 3.3% solidified at various cooling rates from 10-i to 107°C/s were examined. The microstructures of these alloys are classified into three types in accordance with the cooling rate and titanium content; i) aluminum enforced solid solution, ii) aluminum solid solution + equilibrium Al3Ti, and iii) aluminum solid solution + metastable Al3Ti. The grain size of aluminum alloys is responsible to the titanium content and appearance of the metastable petal-like structure. The mechanism of the grain refining effect in these alloys is discussed.
