Abstract

A total of 222 elderly patients who were hospitalized in the Division of Rehabilitation, Kusatsu Branch Hospital of the Gunma University Hospital between 1987 and 1996 was analyzed with respect to age, place of residence, disease, complication, duration of impairment, day of hospital treatment, introducer, person taking care of the patient, and members of the family. Of the 222 patients, about 45% were residents of Kusatsu. Among all diseases, cerebral diseases had the highest frequency (38%). Furthermore, 155 patients (70%) had at least one complication. Persons taking care of the patient were wife (21%), son's or brother's wife (33%), and daughter (27%). Most of the caretakers were female (81%). Moreover, 104 patients (47%) had lived alone or with their spouse and 41 patients (6%) had no persons to take care of them. Whereas many patients came to our hospital from afar with expectation of rehabilitation with hot-spring water, it was difficult to follow them up, to contact their family, and to make an environmental arrangement. Though balneotherapy increases the motivation for rehabilitation in the elderly, it is important to reconsider the necessity of rehabilitation in the elderly from the viewpoint of disability, handicap and goal.
