A new bacterial disease was found on muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) grown in plastic house covered with polyethylen and cheese-cloth, in summer, 1976, in Yamagata prefecture. The desease usually occurred on leaves, fruits and rarely on stems. On leaves, the small water-soaked spots appeared at first and then they turned into brown angular spots. On fruits, a small water-soaked spots appeared at first, then they fused into large dark green lesions, as if each net was painted one by one. On stems, brown lesiosn started from the wound parts of stem and showed long-shape. The bacterial isolates from the affected part of leaf, fruit and stem were pathogenic to the leaf, fruit and stem of muskmelon through artificial spray inoculation. No significant difference was observed in pathogenicity and serological diagnosis of these studies, it is suggested that the causal bacterium is considerd identical with Pseudomonus lachrymans. The etiological examination indicats that epidemic outbreak is ascribed to the unusual cold and dampish conditions in summer, 1976.
