Description

A survey on the possible relation between individuals' physical development and the incidence of dental decay has been carried out on a population of primary and secondary school pupils which represented the most accelerated growth stages of human life. The body height, body weight and the chest girth were respectively adopted as measures for estimating individuals' physical attainment ; the mean values for respective item were calculated for each sex and each age stage and expressed by X, and the standard deviations of variate expressed by Sx. Magnitude of the physical attainment was classified into three categories, large, medium and small, corresponding respectively to those showing larger values than X^^-+Sx, to those showing smaller values than X^^-+Sx but larger values than X^^--Sx, and to those showing smaller values than X^^--Sx. Percent DMFT and percent decayed teeth refer respectively to the numbers of such teeth among the total number of existing permanent teeth as expressed in percentages. Results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. percent DMFT and Physical Attainment Higher percentages of DMFT were observed in individuals with inferior physique than in those with superior physique for both sexes. 2. Percent (dft+DMFT) and physical attainment Higher percentages of dft+DMFT were observed in the male subjects having lesser body weight and chest girth rather than in the comparable subjects with superior body weight and chest girth. With regard to body height in male subjects and body height, weight and chest girth in female subjects, hardly any significant relation could be observed to exist between the values obtained for these items and percentages of dft+DMFT.
