Description
The rate of apparent photosynthesis, CO2 evolution in the light, and dark respiration of detached poplar leaves were measured under various light, temperature, and water conditions. CO2 evolution into CO2-free air was found to be inhibited in poplar leaves at low light intensities as other workers had found in other species. The largest value of apparent photosynthesis was obtained at 20, 000 lux, and at 25°C. The maximum rate of CO2 evolution in the light was observed at 30°C.<br> Change in the rate of apparent photosynthesis and CO2 evolution in the light during increasing water stress was studied. The tendency of CO2 evolution under water stress in the light was similar to that of apparent photosynthesis. Furthermore, the effect of water stress on apparent photosynthesis and CO2 evolution in the light was controlled by leaf areal weight, showing the index of leaf age.
