Abstract

The author investigated crown morphology, distinguishing between the part of the crown exposed to sunlight and the shaded part by mainly using the measurements of a large number of crowns on 24 evenaged stands of Sugi (Yabukuguri) in Oita district. The following general trends were ascertained: (1) The form of the exposed part of the crown did not appear to vary with crown size or crown slenderness ratio. (2) The crown slenderness ratio of the exposed part of the crown had no correlation with crown diameter. (3) The length of the shaded part of the crown was unrelated to crown diameter. These results do not agree with those obtained by BURGER, KOIDE and MAYER in even-aged stands of some tree species other than Sugi. The disagreements between the two are, the author guesses, mostly due to the wide range of crown diameter within a stand. In the case of even-aged stands of Sugi (Yabukuguri) in Oita district where the range of crown diameter within a stand was very small, it may be admissible to set a simple pattern on the crown morphology within a stand. That is to say that the exposed part of the crown with identical form and slenderness ratio, namely, with the similar figure is added on the cylinderical shaded part the length of which is equal independently of crown diameter.
