Description

This paper reports an experimental study on electro-drainage of landslide clay, using a sample taken from Yui, Shizuoka prefecture. Landslides clay absorbs water easily, but drains slowly. Montmorillonite minerals are typical of this problem. The swelling of clay particles due to water absorption makes prevention of landslides difficult. The authors tried to facilitate water drainage from such clay by applying direct electrical current to the electric double layer of the mineral structure. The effect was that the remolded clay drained more efficiently. In the laboratory, formulas were derived by governing the relation between the amount of water drainage and other factors. The gradual decrease of water content due to increasing evaporation from higher soil temperature was also examined. The experiments ascertained both the effectiveness of pore water pressure reduction and the phenomenon of clay hardening.
