Description

The pine-moth, Dendrolimus spectabilis BUTLER collected from different localities was reared under short days immediately after hatching in order to study the geographical variation in diapause. Generally, the northern populations entered diapause in younger larval stages than the southern ones, and the head width of diapausing larvae in the northern populations was smaller than that in the southern ones even at the same instar. However, the beginning of diapause, the age structure and the body size seemed to be closely related to the coldness of winter rather than to the difference of geographical latitude. It was considered that the geographical variation in diapause of the pine-moth larvae was caused not only by differences in temperature conditions of localities but also by differences in hereditary physiological features of local populations.
