Abstract

In the study of tree growth the crown dimension is of central importance and is strongly related to the tree increment. To obtain information necessary to calculate the surface area and volume of tree crown, the author investigated the crown form of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) in even-aged stand. (1) The total crown is divided in two parts. The upper part exposed to sunlight has a geometric shape between a cone and a paraboloid, while the lower shaded part is a cylinder. (2) The relative crown curve of the part of the crown exposed to sunlight swells out with increasing age. (3) The form of cross-section may be regarded as a circle at any point on the crown. From these it is necessary to calculate the crown surface area and volume distinguishing between the part exposed to sunlight and the shaded part because not only the form but also the photosynthetic efficiency differs between the two. The dimensions of the latter may be decided as those of a cylinder. However, the calculation of those of the former should not be based upon a simple geometrical solid, cone or paraboloid, but on one that conforms as exactly as possible to the actual crown. Crown measurements for this procedure can be done relatively easily by using the Spiegel relaskop with wide scale.
