Abstract

Variations of the relative stem-form and three normal form-factors, λ0.1n, λ0.3n, and λ0.5n, and their correlations with each factor of the stem within a stand were examined by using measurements of felled trees from many stands of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON), hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa S. et Z.), akamatsu (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), and karamatsu (Larix leptolepis GORD.). The results were: (1) Variations of the relative stem-form and normal formfactors were more or less different, corresponding to those of stem factors among tree species. (2) In the middle and lower parts of the stem, the coefficient of variation of the relative stem-form was about several percentage points, and the relative stem-form had no correlation with stem factors, whereas in the upper part of the stem the relative stem-form was correlated slightly with stem factors and its variation was larger. (3) The coefficient of variation of the normal formfactor was several percentage points regardless of the kind of normal form-factor. (4) λ0.3n had no correlation with any stem factor, although both λ0.1n, and λ0.5n were not so. (5) Judging from the above, it is concluded that the relative stem-form and normal form-factors within the same stand are similar among trees.
