Abstract

To determine if qualitative and quantitative changes of phenolic compounds of the annual shoots would be attributable to the difference in resistance to the shoot blight disease, the annual shoots of four resistant and four susceptible clones of 14-year-old larches were collected twice a month between June 17 and October 16, 1976, and phenolic constituents were analyzed by GLC. Inter-clonal differences in quality were found for taxifolin-3'-O-glucoside which was in two resistant clones from June to September, and for afzelechin which was in one resistant clone from August to October, while not present in other clones. Quantitative differences between the resistant and susceptible clones were found for some compounds. The content of catechin in four resistant clones was clearly greater than in susceptible ones in the period from July to September. The content of taxifolin in the three resistant clones increased from July to September and became over seven times as much as those of susceptible ones. The total content of phenolics in two resistant clones was always over two times as much as those of susceptible ones. The content of the third resistant clone was as little as those of susceptible ones from June to July and became about two times as much in September. Taxifolin and catechin with the same concentration as in the resistant clone exhibited harmful effects on the growth of the pathogen in the culture.
