Abstract

Butt-rot fungi and decay patterns were investigated on 118 Japanese larch trees (Larix leptolepis (SIEB. et ZUCC, ) GORD.), 74_??_75 years old, located at the foot of Mt. Yatsugatake, Nagano Pref. Phaeolus schweinitzii (FR.) PAT., Sprassis crispa (WULF.) FR., and an unidentified basidiomycetous fungus (frequencies of isolation: 41, 12, and 9%, respectively) were isolated from the trees, but no decay fungi were isolated from 38% of them. The decayed parts in the trunks were 0.9_??_23.5cm (average 9.5cm) in diameters at the bases of the trees and were 6.7_??_450.0cm (average 115.1cm) above the ground. The diameters and heights differed with the different butt-rot fungi. There was a correlation between the heights of the decay and the volumes of the decayed portions.
