抄録

This report describes a system for estimating the merchantable volume to any desired top diameter and log length. The BEHRE and KUNZE equations were adopted for a stem curve because they are virtually a single parameter equation. The relationship between the parameter of the stem curve equation, diameter at breast height, and total height was clarified. When this relationship is arrived at, the stem curve equation for each tree is obtained from the diameter at breast height and the total height. Then the merchantable height is estimated from a variable merchantable top diameter and the log length by using this equation. Merchantable volume is obtained as the volume of a solid between the base and the merchantable height with a stem curve. Applied to sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON) the total and merchantable volumes were estimated with a standard error of about 7-9 and 11 percent, respectively. Therefore, this system is practical and useful.
