Abstract

A growth model for average height in even-aged pure stands is obtained on the basis of the average basal area growth model already developed. This model for average height distinguishes between the increase in average height due to the growth of individual trees and that due to the removal of smaller trees by low-thinning. This model is developed on the hypothesis that average basal area is directly proportional to the squared average height above breast height, and the proportionality coefficient is a densitydependent parameter, the value of which depends on initial density and varies at the time of thinning. The adequacy of this hypothesis is demonstrated by data from sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON) and hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa S. et Z.) permanent sample plots. Furthermore, a simple relationship between the growth of average height and the height of individual trees is presented. With this simplified relationship, some of the parameters of growth models for total and average basal area and average height can be estimated from height growth data of stem-analyzed sample trees.
