Abstract

In the summer of 1971 full grown larvae of Dendrolimus spectabilis were collected from four young pine stands in Ibaraki prefecture. About one thousand pupae were taken out from the cocoons and numbered individually. The date and time of adult emergence were recorded under the natural photoperiodic condition. In 1972 about three hundred pupae were set in cages of 3m×3m ×2.5m in size which contained young pine trees, and behaviors in emergence, mating and oviposition were observed. The results were as follows:
1) Adult emergence occurred in mid-July. Emergence periods of the male and the female were nearly the same, but the shape of the male's emergence curve was different from that of the female's. The male's curve had a larger plus value of skewness than the female's and as the result, the sex ratio of daily emerged adults increased gradually throughout the emergence period.
2) The male emergence occured from 5 p.m., most frequently at 7:00_??_7:20, just before the nightfall, and ended at 10 p.m.. While the female emerged from 6 p.m., most frequently at 8:00_??_8:20 and ended at 11 p.m.. This one-hour time lag seems to be effective to secure the chance of mating as well as the change of the sex ratio throughout the emergence period.
3) All through the night adults flew occasionally. Fairly active flights were observed in the evening around 7:30 and at dawn around 4:00. Newly emerged adults finished spreading their wings in thirty minutes and the male was ready to fly after one or two hours. The female stayed at the spots where she had spread her wings and mated with the male during 9 p.m._??_2 a.m.. The couples kept still untili dawn and then most of them finished coupling and flew. Through the daytime adults kept still. The female began to lay eggs around 7:30 p.m., just after the evening flight, and finished it around 9 p.m..
