Mixed stands were established to investigate the management system for transforming even-aged pure stands into mixed stands. Two deciduous broadleaved tree species, Quercus serrata and Q, acutissima, were planted after the thinning of canopy trees, Chamaecyparis obtusa and Pinus taeda. Thinning rates and relative light intensities were controlled to change gradually in each stand. Two leaf-rolling weevil species, Deporaus unicolor (ROELOFS) and Apoderus erythrogaster VOLLENHOVEN, appeared and defoliated the Quercus trees. A different response to relative light intensity was shown by each species. Trees receiving less light were defoliated severely by D. unicolor, whereas light intensity did not have such an effect on defoliation by A. erythro-gaster. As a result, it is suggested that it is necessary to consider the indirect effects of light intensity upon the growth of trees.
