The mutagenicity of N-nitrosomethamphetamine and N-nitrosoephedrine synthesized from methamphetamine and ephedrine in our laboratory was proved to be significant by the modified method of the Ames assay using Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and TA98 and E. coli WP2 uvrA/pKM in the presence of hamster S9.<br>The formation of N-nitrosomethamphetamine from methamphetamine and nitrite when incubated in vitro in the human urine or in human gastric juice was found. On the other hand, N-nitrosomethamphetamine was detected from the urine of methamphetamine addicts.<br>The identification of N-nitrosomethamphetamine was carried out by GC/MS.
