The fire men in the fire brigade stations in Tokyo are laied down in duty for 24 hours each time. With frequency of fire- and traffic-accidents, they are forced to work more than the hours of their duty. The subjects of observation are 150 fire men in the Hongo Fire Brigade Station of the Tokyo Fire Defense Board. The study on the labour condition and the mental or physiological function was carried out from July, 1961 to March, 1962.
In this paper are described the results concerning the outline of the labour conditions and the mental or physiological functions of the fire men under the hours of their duty as mentioned above.
From these results the authors assumed that an influence of the continuous mental tension upon them was unexpectedly obvious and a management in supply and demand of the nutrition was insufficient. Furthermore, it was expected that these labour conditions would have hastened a development of the cardio-vascular unsoundness in the fire men.
