Abstract
Supervisory authorities, suspecting untoward effects of cadmium advised a preliminary screening examination on 1, 420 workers of a zinc refinery plant.
Actual examinees numbered 1, 398 giving a 98.4% respondent rate.
Results are outlined as follows:
(1) Urine Protein Sensitivity Rate
M F
Sulfosalicylic Acid-20% 14.7% 15.5%
Trichloracetic Acid-35% 6.5% 9.5%
Sugar (Tes-Tape) 7.8% 1.4%
(2) Occurrence rates of screening protein and sugar varied according to the work, though no consistent relation between these rates and intensity of exposure to Cd was obtained. The rate of positive protein was obviously higher among workers who had been or are now engaged in refining or processing work of Cd as compared to other industries (P<0.01).
(3) The dental yellow ring (cadmium ring) was not observed among the workers. Dental examination was made difficult due to considerable deposits of nicotine etc, as well as poor dental repair and ill fitting dentines.
(4) Symptomatology varied according to the work. Those refining or processing Cd complained of respiratory tract and nasal symptoms. There was also body weight loss at a higher rate than other workers (P<0.01). Those complaining of nocturnal pollakiuria were significant in this group (P<0.01).
(5) Conference results delivered by the group of examining physicians revealed that 525 males and 20 females showed no effects of Cd. This number accounts for 41.8% of 1, 303, this representing the remainder obtained by subtracting from the total number of examinees those engaged in refining or processing of cadmium.
