Influence of chromium on the tempering characteristics, especially on the resistance to softening during tempering of 0.4%C-1%Mo-0.4%V-Cr hot-work die steels was studied in order to increase the durability of hot-work dies.<br>As a rasult, it was found that hardness after tempering at lower than 550°C increased with chromium content, on the other hand, hardness after tempering at higher than 650°C decreased with chromium content. The reason why chromium make the resistance to softening by tempering at high temperature small was supposed from the metallurgical investigations of 1% and 3%Cr steel as follows; two types of carbides were observed in a low chromium steel, and fine one of them was identified to M2C (and/or VC) and coarse globular carbide was indentified to M3C (and/or M7C3). On the other hand, only globular carbide (M3C and/or M7C3) was observed in high chromium steel, and coarsening rate of globular carbide during holding at more than 650°C was found to be larger than that of fine M2C and/or VC.
