Plasma-arc melting has been recognized as a useful and practical melting method for various metals and alloys. It has been recently found that plasma-arc melting is available for refining of refractory metals, such as degassing and removal of metallic impurities, when hydrogen gas is added to a plasma generating gas, that is so-called hydrogen plasma-arc melting. This novel refining effect is supposed to be caused by the dissociated and activated hydrogen atoms in a plasma-arc.<br>In this article, a brief summary of the author's recent studies on recovery of pure refractory metals, such as tantalum and zirconium, from their scraps by making effective use of the refining effect of hydrogen plasma-arc melting is given and discussed.
