Abstract
Five cultures of the causal bacterium isolated from diseased leaves of Cayratia japonica (Thunb.) Gagn. were characterized and compared with the descriptions of Pseudomonas cissicola (Takimoto, 1939) Burkholder, 1948. All isolates were pathogenic on C. japonica causing leaf spot, but not on Vitis vinifera and Parthenocissus tricuspidata. The symptoms on C. japonica were identical with those originally described by Takimoto (1939). However, the present isolates differed from Takimoto's descriptions of P. cissicola in flagellation, gelatin liquefaction, litmus milk reaction, starch hydrolysis, pigment production in Uschinsky's solution, growth at 5C and acid production from glucose, sucrose, lactose, and glycerol. Because of the differences in bacteriological characteristics, an emended description is given of P. cissicola (Takimoto, 1939) Burkholder, 1949. Isolate PC1 was designated as the neotype strain.
