Abstract

The muscles of ayu Plecoglossus altivelis from the juvenile (June) through adult (October) stage were observed histologically. The mean value of cross-sectional area of muscle fivers increased between June and September, from 4-8×10-3mm2 to 3-9×10-2mm2. There was no significant difference in the cross-sectional area between diploid and triploid fishes. The appearance of phagocyte-like cells positive to antibody against salmon muscle cathepsin L and the concurrent disintegration of muscle fivers was considered to bring about a qualitative decline of the fish muscle at the spawning stage.
