Abstract

In a previous paper, 1) it was reported that the anchovy worm which was often found in the body cavity of the anchovy, Engrauris japonica (HOUTTUYN), was regarded as a plerocer-cus larva of Callotetrarhynchus sp., frequently found in the body cavity of the cultured yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL. The present paper reports the morphological and histological observations made of the larvae collected from anchovies caught in the Bungo Channel and the Sea of Suo.
The anchovy worm is a white, leech-like moval parasite. The average size is 33.8×2.2mm (n=10) in a stationary state but the body when moving elongates to 50 mm and contracts to 14mm (Fig. 1). The activity of exposed worms is kept for a week in an ice box (0-4°C).
The worm has an unique organ which is regarded as a kind of “borer” at the top of the body (Fig. 2; Pl. 1, Fig. 1-5). The borer consists of a group of gland cells on the surface of the lumen and a group of musclar fibers surrounding the lumen. The other structures, viz., skin, parenchyma and osmoreguratory system are similar to those of the adults of the common cestodes.
The worm invades with its tail into the liver of the anchovy (Pl. 1, Fig. 6). The average parasitic rate observed in the anchovies landed at Murozumi in Yamaguti prefecture was 13.4% (Table 1). As to the parasitism of this worm, it is a most interesting fact that an infected anchovy usually harbours only one worm.
