抄録

Total production of castings in Japan is about six million tons in last year, and it is increasing in this year. In the part of foundry science, directional solidification mechanism, relation between solidification phenomena and solidification structure, dendrite formation mechanism, grain refining, and inoculation etc are researched.<br>Silica sand is used as foundry sand and its standard has been renewed as JIS G 5901. Recently recycling use of foundry sand is researched. As inorganic binder of sand, sodium silicate is mainly used and as organic binder of sand, fenol resin is mainly used by shell mould process. Chromite sand is used for steel castings protecting sinter defects.<br>Low frequency electric furnace melting process is used as cast iron melting, especialy manufacturing of spheroidal cast iron.<br>Many kinds of magnesium adding methods are developed and production of spheroidal cast iron is increasing in Japan recently.
