Floodirg was observed in four wetted wall towers of 1.89, 3.16, 4.18 and 4.91 cms. inner diameters.<BR>It was found that the flooding was caused by the fact that the gas stream, colliding with the crests of waves which were gresent on the surface of the falling liquid film, blew off the liguid mass in that part. Loading was scarcely recognized.<BR>The data obtained were fairly well correlated with the following empirical equation, <BR>where G and L are the flow rates of gas and liquid in flooding condition, Re the Reynolds Number, d the diameter of the tower, σ the surface tension, μ the viscosity, ρ the density, and the suffixes G and L refer to gas and liquid respectively. The influence of the surface tension which had been uncertain was found to be considerably big.<BR>By comparing this equation with the correlation diagram of flooding in a packed tower proposed by Lobo and others, we discussed the difference between the mechanisms of flooding in both the towers.
