Abstract

Twenty-six monoclonal antibodies to mouse hepatitis virus, MHV-NuU were produced and characterized for their viral polypeptide specificity. Of these, twenty antibodies were specific to the peplomer protein, while six were to the nucleocapsid one. By immunoprecipitation, these monoclonal antibodies to MHV-NuU were shown to react with MHV-D, MHV-JHM, MHV-S and MHV-2, indicating that these antibodies directed to antigen(s) common to the five virus strains. Only four of the twenty peplomer-specific antibodies had neutralizing activity. No correlation was found between antigenic relatedness and pathogenicity for mice among these viral strains.
