A variety of characteristics of membranous materials are surveyed from a dielectric point of view. In particular, the frequency profiles of the dielectric relaxations are discussed in connection with the inner structure of the membranous materials. The majority of dielectric relaxations observed for membranous materials are attributed to their heterogeneous structure. Dielectric relaxation patterns are compared with one another, being subjected to the theoretical analysis in order to elucidate the inner structure of several examples : underwater polystyrene films, reverse osmotic membranes, bilayer lipid membranes, emulsions, microcapsules, yeast cell suspensions, and lymphoma cells.<BR>The comparison of the feature of dielectric relaxations of these membrane systems leads to the following features : (1) The number of dielectric relaxations is equal to or smaller than that of the kind of interfaces. (2) The dielectric approach is effective for drawing without damage the interior information from living cells. (3) The time-course can readily be observed with respect to the ion migration and the ion leakage across the membranes.
