The intermediate (I) strains of Salmonella pullorum, which had been detected most frequently in Japan, were classified on the basis of the kind of liberated phages and susceptibility to group IV phages. Moreover, epizootiological investigation was carried out on pullorum disease. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. Eighty-eight strains of I type were divided into 9 types, from "a" to "i", on the basis of the kind of liberated phages and phage susceptibility. 2. The strains isolated from adult chickens and those from chicks were classified into 3 and 8 types, respectively, by using the same method as above. 3. In general, a single type was detected from all the adult chickens of the same flock. Two types were detected, however, from each of 4 flocks out of thirteen. 4. In 20 of 21 cases of adult chickens, chicks, and dead-in-shell chicks, the strains isolated from an individual were of the same type. In the remaining case, two types were detected from a chicken. In this bird, the type isolated from unabsorbed yolk was different from that isolated from the other organs. The author wishes to express his cordial gratitude to Professor K.
