In order to solve the question whether adrenal cortical hormones acted as an initiator of the induction and activation of fowl blood plasma F-GOT, a few experiments were performed. The results obtained are as follows. 1. An experiment was carried out on the way of the primary or secondary administration of ACTH, tetracosactide (T-cosac.), or corticoid, betamethasone disodium phosphate (beta-MDP) to either intact or adrenalectomized fowls. The results obtained made it possible to draw the following conclusions. (a) The induction of transaminases of the F-GOT system was controlled appropriately in the presence or by the release of adrenal cortical hormones. (b) The induced F-GOT was released from the carcass into blood plasma. (c) At dose levels displaying optimal stimulating dffects, the time required for the activation of induced F-GOT to appear was also closely related to the rate of turnover of this enzyme. 2. Additional information was obtained on F-GOT induced by daily administration with beta-MDP for 1 week. It is summarized as follows. (a) A slight but highly significant increase was seen in F-GOT activity on the 3rd and 10th days after the first injection of beta-MDP. The time required for this change to appear was roughly proportional to the degree of protein depletion. The values of F-GOT activity were 1.51 to 1.43 times as large as those of specific activity to the level in a normal steady state. (b) Beta-MDP administration also reduced the rate of turnover of F-GOT by approximately two orders. (c) The net effect of beta-MDP administration on intact fowls as a whole was clearly catabolic, as evidenced by a decrease in total body weight. From the results dedcribed above, it is reasonable to consider that these induction and activation are secondary adaptable responses to the mobilization of protein and the increase of protein catabolism. Besides, it is suggested that the end products of many multienzymatic and hormonal control systems may act as specific regulators with their kinetic behaviors.
