The serum concentrations of progesterone, 11-hydroxycorticosteroids (11-OHCS), total protein, albumin, α-globulin, β-globulin and γ-globulin were estimated in cows clinically known to be affected with ovarian dysfunction, such as cystic ovary, ovarian hypofunction associated with anestrus or feeble estrus, persisting corpus luteum and ovarian atrophy. They were compared between these cows and control cows with a normal estrous cycle. Serum progesterone was measured by radioimmunoassay and 11-OHCS by the fluorometric method. Total serum protein concentrations were estimated by a refractometric instrument and protein fraction values by electrophoresis with cellulose acetate strips. Serum progesterone concentrations were significatly higher (P≤0.01) in cows showing anestrus or feeble estrus with functional corpus luteum and follicles or large cystic follicles than in the control cows at the follicular phase. Serum 11-OHCS values were significantly higher (P≤0.01) in cows with clinical ovarian dysfunction than in the control cows. The concentrations of total serum protein and γ-globulin were significantly higher (P≤0.05) in cows with cystic ovary than in the controls or those with ovarian hypofunction. From these results it is suggested that the increased level of serum progesterone may be responsible for the suppression of behavioral estrus, and that adrenal hyperactivity and nutlitional inbalance may possibly play a role in causing ovarian dysfunction in cows.
