A survey was conducted on the occurrence of hepatic abscesses among slaughtered cattle in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, by bacteriological examination. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Of 867 animals slaughtered over a period from December, 1970 to August, 1971, 46 animals (5%) had hepatic abscesses of varying sizes. 2. 0f 66 hepatic abscesses found, 57 (86%) contained Fusobacterium necrophorum. In 21 of these specimens, the organism was isolated in pure culture. In the majority of the rest, it was detected predominantly. From 7 specimens, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Peptostreptococcus, Micrococcus, fungi, Enterobacteriaceae and Gram-negative rods were isolated. No organisms were found in 2 specimens. 3.
