We examined the effect of 7-day application of the oral moisturizer Aqua Mucus® in patients with dry mouth. In these subjects, the resting salivary secretion, measured by the spitting method, was less than 1.5 ml/15 min or the stimulated salivary secretion, measured by the gum test, was less than 10.0 ml/10 min. We rated resting salivary secretion, stimulated salivary secretion, and extent of oral moisture, measured using an oral moisture checker; and 6 subjective symptoms of dry mouth (dry mouth, eagerness to drink, difficulty in taking food, sensation of saliva, difficulty in pronunciation, and abnormal taste sensation) using the visual analogue scale (VAS) at the start of the experiment, after 7 days of use, and after a 7-day period of non-use. We analyzed the variations with one-way repeated measures analysis of variance, Dunnett's multiple comparison test, Friedman's test, and Dunn's multiple comparison test.<br>Results: The mean age of 15 subjects was 65.9 years. The average resting salivary secretion and average stimulated salivary secretion had significantly increased after using the oral moisturizer. The average extent of tongue and buccal mucosa moisture increased significantly from 26.3 ± 4.1 to 29.6 ± 1.7 and from 28.3 ± 2.4 to 30.4 ± 1.5, respectively. With respect to the subjective symptoms of dry mouth, the changes in the median VAS scores changed significantly for dry mouth, difficulty in taking food, sensation of saliva, and difficulty in pronunciation. Thus, we conclude that the oral moisturizer is easy to use and has very few side effects, and should be routinely used as an adjuvant treatment for dry mouth.
