Abstract

More than 700 bacterial species, of which over 50% have not been cultivated, have been detected in the oral cavity. Although research on organisms of caries or periodontosis is progressing, there are very few reports on studies of normal flora in the mouth. Therefore, we identified saliva flora including those that cannot be cultivated, using 16S ribosomal RNA gene which it has only bacteria.<br>We used this method to analyze bacterial flora in saliva of patients with periodontal disease, and compared the results with healthy subjects. Consequently, bacterias such as Peptostreptococcus, Veillonella, Clostridium, porphyromonas, Capnocytophaga were detected, which are normally not seen in healthy subjects. This method could help clarify the symptoms of periodontal disease or odontogenic infection.
