We report a case of a myoepithelioma arising in the palate of a boy, which we studied immunohistochemically.
A 17-year-old boy had noticed a tumor in the right soft palate 2 years previously, but he did nothing about it, because he had no pain. The tumor was found by his dentist at odontotherapy, and he was referred to our department on November 13, 1998. A hemisphere swelling of an elastic, soft, and movable tumor, measuring 18×18mm, was found in the right soft palate. MRI and CT showed that the tumor to be clearly distinguished from other tissues, and there was no bone destruction.
Suspecting a pleomorphic adenoma in the palate, we conducted a biopsy on January 26, 1999, and diagnosed it as a pleomorphic adenoma. However, since there was a suspicion of it being a myoepithelioma, the tumor was enucleated under general anesthesia on December 25, 1999.
According to histopathological and immunohistochemical study (S-100 protein, total keratin, cytokeratin 10/13, and cystkeratin 18), we diagnosed it as a myoepithelioma. The patient, whom we are following as an outpatient, has had no recurrence and is doing well.
