抄録

The purpose of this study was to clarify the differences of soft palate and pharyngeal morphology between patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and non-apneic individuals (control group) in the Japanese population based on cephalometric analysis. All subjects were males under the age of 65 years. The control group was assigned so that the body mass index (BMI) was not significantly different between the control group and the OSAS patients group. The cephalometric radiographs of 40 OSAS patients and 50 non-apneic individuals were traced and digitized using a scanner. Then, the length, thickness, and area of the soft palate, and the length and area of the pharyngeal space in each subject were measured on the digitized images using a computer. The difference of each parameter between the OSAS patient group and the control group was statistically analyzed using the unpaired t test.<BR>As a result, in the OSAS patient group, the length of the soft palate and the length of the pharyngeal space were significantly larger, and the area of the soft palate was significantly wider than those in the control group.<BR>In conclusion, we consider that the soft palate and pharyngeal morphology may be associated with the pathogenesis of OSAS in the Japanese population.
