説明

There are innumerable nonmetric (discrete) cranial traits. It has been reported that the appearance of such traits are related to hereditary factors. Regarding appearance, almost all of the traits are characterized by homogeneity within populations and by diversity among populations. Moreover, these traits are already formed at viviparity. Accessory mental foramen (AMF) in the mandible is one of the nonmetric cranial traits, and can be seen in the circumference of the mental foramen. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of occurrence of AMF in the modern Japanese mandible. We examined the relation of the trait to clinical viewpoints. We investigated the mandible in three regional groups of Japan: Kyushu, Honshu (Chugoku to Kanto districts), and Tohoku region, and used panoramic X-ray films to try to find the AMF among Japanese.
The frequency of AMF in Japanese was 12.33%, and there was no significant difference in frequency among sex and region. In the panoramic investigation of Japanese, the estimated frequency is 8.00-17.50%.
The existence of AMF should be considered when performing surgical procedures such as implant surgery.
