The relation between the number of broods a year of the rice stem borer and the local characteristics of post-diapause development, the critical day-length for diapause induction and the larval growth were studied among different geographical populations in Japan. The post-diapause development in the borer larvae after hibernation were found to vary among different geographical populations. The larvae collected from a range of latitudes, from about 36° to 40°N, where the borer had two-broods, developed fast, while the borer larvae collected from neighboring areas to the north and the south, where the borer had one-brood and two-broods respectively, developed slowly. The variation has a cline within the region and where the number of annual brood was same, borer developed faster in the northern populations than the southern ones. However, this clinal variation might be reversed in the transitional zone between the one-brood areas to the north and the two-brood areas to the south. A high correlation between the latitudes of the borer origin and the critical day-length for diapause induction was shown, regardless of the voltinism or ecotype, and the critical day-length tended to lengthen according to the increase in the latitudes of the borer origin. Duration of the pupal development varied in different geographical populations and several groups having different pupal periods could be discriminated. Geographical variation showed a cline in the growth rates of non-diapause larvae, like that of the post-diapause development.
