Abstract

When spores of Bacillus natto were inoculated onto meat extract agar, almost all of them germinated at about 20 minutes of incubation at 37C, and the outgrowth phase finished at about 120 minutes.
Some of the spores of B. natto incculated into the ligated loops of the ileum in dogs were able to germinate, but died after germination. When inoculated into the ligated loops of the colon, spores failed to germinate.
Some of the spores were able to germinate, but died after germination in a medium prepared from the heated (120C for 20 minutes) or unheated contents of the ileum. When cultivated in a medium prepared from the heated contents of the colon, almonst all the spores germinated, but not when cultivated in a medium prepared from the unheated contents of this organ.
