The development of organophosphorus resistance of Aphis gossypii populations was studied by determinating individual aliesterase activity in laboratory and field tests. When potato populations were treated with malathion, individuals with high enzyme activity were selected. Intensity of selection pressure was dependent upon insecticide concentration. Distribution of individual enzyme activity in each treatment did not change much after one month. High enzyme activity in a melon clone was maintained by breeding for 50 generations for approximately one year, but with very broad distributions in the same generation. In the greenhouse eggplant, ratio of individuals with high activity increased in correspondence with insecticide spraying. In the case of outdoor eggplants, however, such increases were a passing phenomenon. Alatae with low activity immigrated vigorously into these populations.
