Comparison was made in the pattern of uterine contractions throughout laying cycles be-tween the chicken, quail and turkey. Chronic bipolar electrodes were implanted in the caudal uterine muscle and the EMG of the uterus (shell gland) was continuously monitored by radio telemetric techniques in free moving hens. Clear action potentials were recorded from the uterus of the three species. The frequency of the uterine EMG activity was expres-sed as an index of uterine contraction. The pattern between ovulation and subsequent ovi-position consisting of three phases were observed, (1) a period of quiescent uterine activity, (2) a period of medium level uterine activity which lasts for 18-22 hours and (3) a brief period when the frequency of uterine contraction is elevated. In the quail and chicken, those phases correspond to the descent of the egg in the upper oviduct, the residence of the egg in the uterus, and the expulsion of the egg from the uterus. In contrast, the period of uterine quiescence is either absent or very short in the turkey hen and the period of medium level uterine contraction begins before the egg has entered the uterus. After the terminal (Ct) oviposition of a sequence a significant increase in uterine contraction was observed dur-ing the preovulatory period of the first (C1) ovulation of the next sequence despite absence of an egg in the uterus. Notably, a transient but sharp increase in uterine contraction oc-curred at half to one hour prior to the C1 ovulation in all these three species indicating that the ovulation process may, at least in a part, participate in the regulation of a midsequence oviposition which accompanies ovulation in the quail and turkey as the case in the chicken.AcknowledgmentsThis study was supported by Grants-in-aid, No. 5756023, to K.
