In the Gifu Native Fowl, adult plumage is normally wild, wheaten or white. However, Goshiki plumage (Cream; ig) and Black headed plumage (black feathers on the head; Bh) fowls were reported recently. Present studies were conducted to investigate the relationships between the gene ig or Bh and ey on plumage in the Gifu Native Fowl. Results obtained were as follows.<br>A cock which had shown yellow down at hatch and showed wild type plumage with normal feathers on the head at adult (yellow down-wild plumage-normal headed cock) was mated with striped down-Goshiki plumage-black headed hens, and produced F1 striped down-wild plumage-normal or black headed male and female fowls, yellow down-wild plumage-normal or black headed male fowls and yellow down-wheaten plumage-normal headed female fowls. Then F1 yellow down-wild plumage-normal headed cocks (expected genotype is ey ey Ig ig bh bh) were crossed with F1 striped down-wild plumage-black headed hens (e+ ey Ig ig Bh bh). From this F1 mating, all of the phenotypes of plumage were obtained in the male offsprings, namely striped down-wild plumage-normal or black headed, striped down-Goshiki plumage-normal or black headed, yellow down-wild plumage-normal or black headed and yellow down-Goshiki plumage-normal or black headed fowls. While in the female offsprings, striped down-wild plumage-normal or black headed fowls, striped down-Goshiki plumage-normal or black headed fowls and yellow down-wheaten plumage-normal headed fowls were obtained, however, yellow down-Goshiki plumage fowl and yellow down-wheaten plumage-black headed fowl were not obtained. Consequently, it is suggested that the gene ig and Bh have no effect on plumage in the wheaten plumage female (ey ey on E-locus).
