Abstract

Analysis of climatic values obtained through surface observations performed by the Japan Meteorological Agency revealed the existence of an upper limit to the climatic monthly maximum snow depth average during January and February in a wet snow region, i.e. a snowy region where the monthly mean air temperature in January was greater than 0.3°C.The upper limit was determined by the mean air temperature and precipitation amounts in the same period. A simple formula was developed to express the upper limit in terms of these parameters. The formula suggested that the limit increased in proportion to precipitation when the mean air temperature was constant. However, when precipitation was constant, it decreased in proportion to the mean air temperature from a value determined by precipitation. Furthermore, it suggested that no snowy areas in which the monthly maximum snow depth is greater than 10 cm existed in regions where the monthly mean air temperature is greater than 6deg;C. Some other useful results obtained from the formula were also discussed.
