Description
On forensic chemistry, presence of opium is only confirmed by detection of the characteristic alkaloids like morphine and also meconic acid. The detection of meconic acid has required its isolation, purification and derivation. Moreover, it has taken many hours to analyze main alkaloids in opium by GC or GC/MS.
This study was aimed simultaneous analyzing the contained alkaloids and meconic acid and shortening the analyzing time by application of capillary GC/MS.
After treatment of opium with diazomethane, methylated meconic acid, and some main alkaloids were separated with capillary column to be analyzed by capillary GC/MS at short time; therefore, the present method is suitable for the confirmation of opium. This method was applied for confirmation of opium poppy.
