In an inner probe eddy current test for non-ferrous heat exchanger tubes, the authors employed the Wiener filter in order to enhance the restoration characteristic of flaw shape in a 2-D inverse filtering. An inverse filter, whose transfer function was simply derived from a point-spread function, generated much more noise because of the abnormally large value of transfer function in its specific order. The Wiener filter was developed for making noise reduction by utilizing mean square error evaluation. Thus, the SN ratio of a flaw shape restored from ET scanning data by the Wiener filter was much higher than that of a simple inverse filter. In addition, a modification coefficient was introduced into the Wiener filter to adjust the characteristic of de-convolution. When the optimum value of this coefficient was chosen, not only did the SN ratio of the restored flaw shape increase but also the correct flaw depth was given.
