Abstract

The geopark movement is an initiative aimed at sustainable development at local communities. In Japan, there has been little effort on preservation of geological heritage. Japanese earth scientists have not much discussed the theory of geoconservation. Regional municipalities have emphasized regional promotion but not geoconservation. The Japan Association for Quaternary Research (JAQUA) has engaged in efforts at protection and preservation of archaeological sites, landforms, and geological outcrops. Deepening the discussion of geoconservation will lead to an earth science for sustainable development. JAQUA is capable of creating a forum for discussion of geoconservation. Quaternary science is an important research field for scientific evaluation of geological heritage. It can also contribute to the academic process that shows the relevance of each geological, natural, and cultural heritage.
