Reconstruction of changes in the tropical ocean-atmosphere system in the period prior to the use of instrumental records requires the use of climatic and oceanographic proxies such as corals and tree rings. The elemental ratios (Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca) in massive coral skeletons have been used to calculate high-resolution (weekly to monthly) SST (sea surface temperature) in tropical and subtropical oceans during the Quaternary period because there exist significant relationships between the ratios and SST. However, some investigations indicate that skeletal Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca may be influenced by seawater Mg2+/Ca2+ and Sr2+/Ca2+ variations, vital effects, heterogeneity effects, submarine and meteoric diagenesis, and various chemical treatments. If these influences are evaluated quantitatively, the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca thermometers will provide more accurate past SST than at present.
