A twelve stage secondary electron multiplier with Cu-Be dynodes was installed in the photoionization mass spectrometer in University of Osaka Prefecture. The characteristics of the electron multiplier, especially the gains for six noble gas ions and various fragment ions from hydrocarbon molecules, were measured and the following results were obtained.(1)The gain of the electron multiplier exponentially increases with increasing the overall voltage, and the gradients of these semilog plot show the almost same value for every positive ions in question under the overall voltage-1.8 to-3.4 KV.(2)The gains for the singly-and doubly-charged neon and krypton isotopic ions are inversely proportional to the square root of the isotopic masses.(3)The gains for the singly-and doubly-charged noble gas ions, at a definite overall voltage, are both linearly proportional to their ionization potentials, but each inclination results in the different value.(4)At a definite overall voltage, the gains for the fragment ions from hydrocarbon molecules have a tendency to increase by increasing their appearance potentials. In order to explain the present results the emission mechanism of secondary electrons has been discussed.
