Abstract
Tephrochronology and radiocarbon chronology have contributed to establishing a chronological framework for volcanology as well as archaeology in Japan. The 14C dates of paleosols underlying tephra layers, widely distributed in Japan, can represent the eruption age. Recent developments in 14C measurement technique have improved the accuracy of dates and demanded the geological and chronological interpretation of analyzed samples in detail. 14C wiggle-matching linked with dendro- and varve chronology has enabled us to obtain highly accurate dates for a number of areas. Also, it seems that Japanese peat samples can be applicable for 14C wiggle-matching.
